The Rag and Bone Hooded Cape is a perfect staple, with an awesome vintage vibe. It's dressy enough for a night out, but great with my favorite ProportionofBlu jeans (Straight Leg Jeans in Due 2) for work. I know it's going to be my favorite piece going from a cool San Francisco summer, through fall, and with a cozy Vince Stripe Cardigan underneath for winter.

You might not know it yet, but you know Free People. The Philly boutique started by Dick Hayne in 1970 eventually grew to a chain of stores, and was renamed Urban Outfitters. Free People became UO's private label, and became Anthropologie before that also became a chain. The line has come full circle and is once again known as Free People! Whew. While its lineage is famous, Free People has its own unique identity.

![]() |
Free People's vibe is young but well-traveled, adventurous and a little bohemian. It's affordable and versatile, mix and match nomad chic! You'll take every piece on the road with you. Free People appeals to that creative free spirit that doesn't want to look like everyone else, and wants quality without spending a fortune. Wait, that's all of us!

This fall, Free People feels so relaxed and easy to wear that this is our go-to for everyday nubby knits. The sweaters are cozy, toasty, and designed with a youthful twist that gives each its own personality.

When I break out my crayons and go nuts I make a mess that can never be mistaken for art. When See By Chloe puts crayon to fabric, it's magic! Girlish charm is something See By Chloe can do in their sleep, and this Crayon Print Dress has a playful print with tons of left bank spirit. The Crayon Print Dress is must-have right now because it's a smooth transition from end of summer to deep into fall. It features lots of purple too, which is the transitional shade of the moment. Wear the Crayon Print Dress now with a light layer that adds a tailored touch, like a vest (wear it open and unbuttoned). When it starts to get chilly, rock it out with an edgy leather jacket!

A big wad of cash is what keeps most people from getting into selvage denim. The price tag on authentic Japanese selvage is something only hardcore connoisseurs can fork over without flinching. But Naked and Famous Denim is shaking up the denim scene by making quality selvage accessible. In fact, we found the Canadian brand through forum buzz. Denimheads were chasing Naked and Famous Denim after reports of someone making quality selvage for a good price. Dunno how they're doing it, but check out the weaves yourself. Naked and Famous Denim is giving the Japanese brands a run for their money on price and quality!
The WeirdGuy Deep in Selvedge Jeans in Indigo are a good start for raw denim noobies and a must-have addition for the versed. The best $150 you'll spend on denim this year!

The Diesel Veruna Weekend Bag is the do everything bag. Books, business, travel. The guy's guy answer to the man purse, the Veruna Weekend Bag gets even better with age.
Some guys do need to take it all with them. Students, designers, architects, dads. Preppy is hot for fall, and Rag and Bone's Leather Top Tote in wool plaid is a cool creative carryall.
Glenplaid isn't really a preppy plaid, it's more of a suiting plaid that hits on the seasonless back-to-basics, utilitarian trends that feature lots of grey. This J. Fold Plaid Print Messenger Bag makes a nice accent piece for your everyday downtown casual look.

No one rocks harder than Grey Ant. Grant Krajecki mixes costume and everyday for an edgy mix with tons of glam rock attitude. Sexy slip dresses are a Grey Ant specialty, and this fall is no exception with the Mini Shiny Slip Dress. If you've got the body, this body conscious dress in black metallic knit is a knockout, hot from every angle!
Also back again is the oversized shirt mini dress with dolman sleeves, called the Plaid Mini Top for fall (was the Oxford Mini Dress in hemp for spring). This oversized shirt stands out because it's a shot of edgy grunge nestled in a collection that's primarily glammed out. Wear it like a dress with heels and rock the hot boyfriend look!

Founded in 1997, Montreal-based Matt and Nat was churning out vegan leather handbags long before eco design became trendy. Everybody loves Acne because every season they roll out the perfect interpretation of sophisticated basic. It's impossible to spot something in the line that you wouldn't wear, and we always wanna go home with everything! Acne is dressy casual that's superchic and city smart, staunchly gimmick free. Vogue gave Acne some love this month (September 2008 issue), describing them as "...anti-trend but still of-the-moment."
Take a look at these two absolutely of-the-moment dresses—the Blackout Dress and the Babylon Dress! The Babylon Dress is such a must-have we're already sold out! We're praying for a replenishment, stay tuned. The Blackout Dress is so urban chic! It's everyday and easy to wear. We're thinking tights with boots, or belted with heels. Anything goes!
Hey guys, you'll be happy to know we picked up Acne's New Standard line for men! It's coming soon!

Ever since Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) toted that python Hysteria bag last season on Gossip Girls, we've had feverish dreams about medallions and drooling in our sleep! To make it worse, it's out in this season's must-have color—purple. But, who wants to drop $1,650 for post-Tom Ford? Enter Gustto to save the day!

Gustto's sueded Pavia Bag does the medallion look even better than the Hysteria (yes, better!), and the Pavia Bag comes in a more beautiful purple! At $645, it's a win, win, win! The Pavia Bag's boho chic detailing gives it way more personality too. Gustto is definitely a brand you should get to know. Their Italian leathers are always top quality.

As summer in San Francisco fades into cooler days and cold nights I still love my cardigans…but now I love them under my favorite blazer. The Rag and Bone Nancy Blazer is my choice for an everyday fall piece. The Nancy Blazer takes my playful Short Sleeved Dress with Bow by Reyes from fun to flight attendant chic.
If you haven’t already met Rag and Bone and Reyes I know you will love them too. The casual tones that create a classic uniform look that will never go out of style!

Diane von Furstenberg closes down Studio 54 to bring the '40s back to life this fall with a collection of femme fatale dresses and separates inspired by Marlene Dietrich in Billy Wilder's A Foreign Affair. Our DVF must have for fall: the Soffer Print Jersey Dress!

Artificial Flavor is what you'd get if tightie whites and boxers had kids. We all started with tightie whities but at some point moved to boxers. The problem is, if you're still wearing boxers you're a little behind...the times. Boxers are way too loosey goosey to be wearing anymore, getting all bunched up especially under skinnies. You can recreate the sensation by taking the Sunday paper, crumpling it up and just stuffing it down your pants. Boxer briefs are the best! Shopping for them can get confusing, but just know that you have 3 lengths to choose from. There's the mid-thigh brief that's longer and feels kinda like a turtleneck for your thigh, which isn't so bad if you wear neoprene a lot and are used to feeling wrapped. The boxer brief is shorter but not the comfiest, with the banding hitting the thigh right about where your legs and seat drop the most weight on the chair. The perfect undie length is the trunk, which Artificial Flavor does in a variety of colors. The Vintage Wash Trunks are the essential, but if you like racing stripes the Trickster Trunks are more your speed. If you're into old school Artificial Flavor has the Bandito Briefs and Vintage Wash Briefs that would both make your gym teacher happy.
Here's a few shots from a recent fashion show at the W Hotel that included John Varvatos and a lot of near naked dudes sporting Artificial Flavor.
We love our locals! Here's a pic of us with Marcus Prato (he's 2nd from the right between Cathy and Corina) and a friend. Artificial Flavor is, in their own words, "a contemporary San Francisco lifestyle brand that remixes classic garments similar to how DJs remix existing music. By tweaking just the right attributes to alter the original flavor ever so slightly, we're creating new wearable experiences that are familiar enough yet fresh enough for modern day life."

Nudie proves that good guys do finish first. Nudie is our number one selling men's denim, but that's not why you should love 'em. The Nudie philosophy is refreshing independent. The notion of denim as a "second skin" is the Nudie mantra. Don't mind runways trends, make your own style! Nudie is all about telling your own, personal denim story. That kind of everyday truth has no shelf life. Sounds a bit corny but Nudie jeans really are indigo canvases, taking on a wash personality that reflects your lifestyle. We just received some new eye candy in from Super for guys and ladies! We're really digging Super's style because it sends a message that really letting go, having fun and being a rebel is the chic thing to do. So, take a timeout from hitting poses in your serious glam shades and show your creative side in Super's colorful wayfarers! And, just because Super knows how to have fun doesn't mean they're not substantial eyewear. Super shades are handmade in Italy using German Zeiss lenses, so they really do offer your peepers serious protection!
Super is channelling Elvis Costello in the Zeiss Rock Hard Glasses w/Clear Lenses!

Michael and Nicole Colovos (formerly of Habitual) have really put their stamp on Helmut Lang with their own brand of approachable minimalism. The Striped Cardigan is fiercely fashion forward but it's oh so easy to wear! The stripe pattern plays with perspective and adds an avant texture, but what really makes this cardigan a must-have is the asymmetrical closure. It wraps over to give you a second look that's entirely different from wearing it draped and open—two looks in one sweater! How many cardies give you that?

It's been a busy wedding season in '08. Guys have it easy. One suit, switch out the tie. Ladies can't really trot out that same knockout dress. But picking a dress is always fun! Finding a good middle ground between standing out and blending in is a question our buyers are always asked to help answer. When we heard our Senior Buyer was heading to her friend's wedding, we were dying to know which dress she chose.
Jennifer looks amazing in Laila Azhar's silk One Shoulder Drape Dress! The gold on her is precious, and the brilliance matches her smile! The tie belt creates a sculpted silhouette that's dramatic but not too crazy. The bride still gets the attention but the next dress in line is Jennifer's! Focusing on the waist with belting and cinching is a theme that's huge for fall.
I love the flirty play between the modern geometric patterns and old world lace in the Development Button Front Camisole. I can play out my uber girly fantasy of dressing from an era now lost without feeling lost in this city girl lifestyle. I keep close to today’s world with the Mike and Chris Wellington Jacket. It keeps me warm in transitioning seasons without compromising the focus from the top! Of course, I couldn't resist pairing the two with my favorite 12” Lowrise Pencil Leg Lightweight Jeans in Oyster J Brand jeans, they are what really carry me through my day (and) night. They are so comfortable, I could sleep in them!

SONIA by Sonia Rykiel breathes joie de vivre into a blah work week with girlish charm. The Striped Sweater with Tie is vintage Sonia Parisian gamine with a vibrant pop of pink and ribbon tie. We're loving French tops to go with black pants or librarian skirts this season! Oh, and if you've come up empty on your outerwear search, still looking for that perfect coat that's cute, charming, romantic, and of course, toasty, the Side Zip Coat is tres you!

Creative Recreation went all out for the ladies too! The wrestling shoe inspired Galow Hi Sneakers are edgy but still fun and funky! They're supercomfy too. If low is more your style the Cesario Lo Sneakers feature a crazy color combo: purple, which is really huge for fall, and a cool minty green. Creative Recreation's contrasting pops of color are a must-have to go with all the fall neutrals.

DB Clay started out as Garett Stenson handmaking duct tape wallets. It took 30,000 of them to pay for college! Called Ductbills (the "DB"), Stenson added "Clay" in reference to the company's willingness to adapt to changes in the planet's needs. DB Clay uses Tope, a superdurable eco friendly textile that feels like vinyl. Tope is also water resistant, heat and cold resistant, PVC free and non-toxic. In fact, Tope is biodegradable and vegan! Your money's never dirty in DB Clay.

Each print in DB Clay's 3.1 collection is done in non-toxic ink and has a story behind it. The Faith on Juniper Wallet is inspired by a stained wooden box that they found at a thrift store in Portland, and the Childhood Chores Wallet is a sentimental ode to the chores chart Stenson's mother made for him.

Daryl K's Kerrigan is subtly body conscious with an East Village intimacy that's captured in a laid back and easy to wear collection that's a down-to-earth, downtown chic. Daryl K is convinced that "People are going to dress the way they dress," so Kerrigan is very personal—it's all stuff you'd throw on and go when you don't have time to over think. For fall, Kerrigan throws in fun pops of color blocking to lighten up a season so heavy on dour neutrals.
The silk Drawstring Hem Dress is so sleek and sporty! There's a little space odyssey inspiration here too, that futurist vibe we're noticing a lot across collections this season.

Who does knits with more charm than M Missoni? M Missoni's flattering body conscious fits are always smart and sexy. This fall M Missoni brings color to the skirt with some interpretive takes on the family's signature zig zag stripes. The Dot Stripe Mini Skirt comes in a Teal mosaic that has us checking prices on Mediterranean vacations. M Missoni is always hand knit, and the warp and weft on these fall skirts is pretty intricate. You definitely get your money's worth, unlike other brands that charge out the nose for run of the mill jersey. The scarves are here too!

Inhabit is a collection of sublimely comfy luxe knits that fit like a second skin. Susie Cho's collection moves with ease too, making it a huge hit among celebrities with baby bumps. Hollywood's moms-to-be aren't ready to forfeit looking chic for 9 months. Inhabit is not a maternity line, but pregger starlets like Christina Aguilera and Halle Berry have flocked to it for its easy to wear combo of style and comfort. If you're comfortable in your own skin and you like your clothes to reflect that relaxed self-confidence, cozy up to Inhabit.
The Cashmere V-neck Cardigan sums it all up for Inhabit. The cashmere blend is supersoft, stretchy and cozy. If you determine "favorite" by how often you wear something, then this is by far our favorite cardigan. You won't find one as comfy or cozy.
Inhabit's Susie Cho seen in W Magazine, September 2008:
“What I love to hear the most is when they say ‘I wear it everyday.’” – Susie Cho

Rag and Bone charges into fall with an equestrian noir motif that wraps the season's big riding trend in a regiment of military cues. The mood behind the detailing is on the darker side, as Rag and Bone designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright were inspired by Ridley Scott's futurist noir classic Blade Runner, drawing from looks worn by Sean Young and Harrison Ford in the movie.
The Jodhpur Shorts are so preppy chic! Throw on a boyfriend V-neck cardigan, cozy tee and Mary Jane pumps. For guys, the Double Breasted Mac Coat is as slick as slickers come—a retrofitted classic that you'll still be wearing years from now.
Perfect for a trip to grandma's house, the Rag and Bone Hooded Cape! (does not come in red)
Development designer Erica Davies adds hippychic charm to everything she makes. But boho beads aren't the only thing Development is showing for fall. Davies infuses some menswear influences (Dreyfus Belted Vest), a little mod (V-neck Dress), and even a bit of glitz and glam (Kyoka Halter Dress)!

Our pick? Back to boho with the Trapeze Top w/ Beaded Hem. This soft brown silk tunic with charmeuse trim and bold beading is the perfect transition top for right now through fall. For late summer, wear with city shorts and sexy gladiators. For transitional fall, go with skinny jeans, chunky platform sandals and throw on a scarf!

If you've been bummed out that summer is on the way out, the Nicholas K collection will get you excited about falling leaves and wishing for fall to get here, like right now! What Nicholas K did with sweaters and outerwear this season can be described as a modernization, for men and women. With military inspired details that feature lots of double breasted plackets, Nicholas K is a smartly assembled line that sets a new standard for utilitarian chic, and probably a new record for buttons in a collection! Nicholas K really feels like the city, the urban explorer alive in the sprawl! Most of all, it feels updated. Evolved and one step ahead.

The Anneke Cropped Jacket is a good introduction to Nicholas K's outerwear mix of style and function. Love the trench details on a swingy cropped canvas jacket. It has an equestrian look that's begging for boots!

Nicholas K men's fall should be here soon. Here's a little preview. Nicholas K's urban explorer is wearing this evolution of the peacoat. The Gille Sweat jacket is easily one of the coolest we've seen for fall!
(Pictured: Nicholas K Anneke Cropped Jacket, Ollie Sweater and Payton Cropped Jacket)

We hate overusing the word wearable. It's like calling food "edible." Duh right? But degree of "wearability" is really just talking about how likely it is that you'd wear something, in public, how often, and how comfortable and secure you'd be doing it. We prefer the term "easy to wear," as in putting it on and knowing you look great, on any given day. Easy to wear is what Bailey 44 does so well. Bailey 44 is endearing themselves to a growing following by giving even the most basic pieces a designery touch that makes them look and feel special. You'll get a basic V-neck tee, but with a puff pleated sleeve. A stretchy crew neck will come with ruched sleeves, or a babydoll with keyhole detail. Bailey 44 is everyday and easy but never ordinary, featuring lots of trend for fall from flattering body conscious looks to sexy menswear inspired pieces to dramatic gathering and drape.

Some familiar themes are back for Elizabeth and James for Fall 2008. The menswear theme we associate with Ashley is back, even more so this fall with multiple vest and slouchy blazer looks. Mary-Kate's couture infusion is easy to spot in a few feathered numbers to go with the luxe drape and sculpted silhouette pieces. You'd think Elizabeth and James would end up feeling partitioned by twin but all the themes come together nicely to tell the story of a day in the life of a band on tour.
Every night a different city, every night a new persona. It's what the audience expects, an icon looking the part in something yesterday's crowd didn't see. The Elizabeth and James print campaign does a great job of capturing the vibe, but just looking at the clothes, you can see Elizabeth and James actually living on stage, partying in the hotel room, hitting the recording studio, posing for the album cover, and then back on the road to do it all over.

Take a peek at the Irina Dress. The rockstar's party dress. Dramatic but effortless, totally MK!
Oh look, Cathy and Jennifer with MK!
If you're going for the edgy rockstar look this fall, you'll need a leather jacket to pull it off. I mean, how hard can you rock without a leather jacket? Not very. Nothing like a hurricane, at best a light drizzle. S.W.O.R.D.'s handmade motorcycle jackets use the best Italian leather (same as D&G, and you know how much leather goes on there! Who just whipped me?) are staples whether you ride a Japanese sport bike, vintage Triumph or American hog. There's a S.W.O.R.D. jacket that fits your two-wheeling alter ego.

This fall, S.W.O.R.D. offers more looks that grab inspirations from places besides the biker bar. Check out the futurist, alpine flavor of the Silver Ferrara Jacket (comes in Navy too), and the sexy bomber called the Argenta Jacket in Cognac. S.W.O.R.D. does a great job of mixing it up with fashion forward options to go with their tough looks.
The men's S.W.O.R.D. stuff should be here soon too!
Foley and Corinna in Manhattan's Lower East Side is one of our favorite boutiques. If you haven't been, it's a pitch perfect duet of quirky, ethereal decor and vintage collection, and the song would be something dreamy like "Carolyn's Fingers" by the Cocteau Twins. Foley and Corinna have made quite a name for themselves outside their boutique walls with a successful line of handbags. For the clothing though, you'd still have to make a trip to 114 Stanton Street, until now!

Foley and Corinna's clothing is here! And, it faithfully represents everything we love about their collective taste. It's of another time but timeless, effortless, with unmistakable personality, and we love that it caters to the creative side in you. The Foley and Corinna collection is the essence of vintage. It's one-of-a-kind precious.

You can't really claim that you're "into boho" until you have the Foley and Corinna Caftan Dress. Laid back but so chic! Besides pairing with all of your fall tights, we can already picture a ton of accessory options. In keeping with the vintage theme, just about anything from Anna Korte Vintage Jewelry would be perfect (it's genuine vintage)!

Sometimes our legs need a little love, and Falke delivers with its legendary craftsmanship and elegant style. With over 100 years of experience in the legwear industry, this Germany-based line includes knitted socks, fashion stockings and tights that are technically superior in design. For tights that are functional and sophisticated, we slip into Falke and gain some well-deserved attention.
The Falke Pure Matte Tights come in so many colors you'll start building outfits around your hosiery! The Grape is a nice transitional summer to fall color.

You ever know a friend or acquaintance to one day, out of the blue, decide to pronounce her name differently? Like a friend named Jean who used to answer to "JEEN" suddenly answering only to the French pronounciation, "ZHAHN"? It might have followed a big transition, a metamorphosis like going from high school to college, or college into the work force. Life's crossroads are good fishing spots for reinvention. The runway isn't a bad spot either.

We can't call it a comeback because Generra today looks so much different than the Generra that was the trendy, mass market, teenybopper hit in the mid '80s. Remember hypercolor? Generra has resurfaced with new life, and what's most interesting is that they've done it without piggybacking on the resurgence of '80s trends. With bib panel detailing and stripes, today's Generra looks...it looks kinda French! Generra is a collection of everyday pretty clothes with a touch of left bank style. It's effortless, subtle, and feels very personal. Understated chic. "JUH-nerra" is dead, long live "ZHAHN-erra"!
Coming Soon is our newest diffusion line, and you don't need a logo to tell you it's designed by Yohji Yamamoto—the signature simplicity is intact. Coming Soon is Yohji done very casual. The pricing is definitely the friendliest you'll see with Yamamoto's name. The best part about this collection is that it's all designed to be mix and match, which isn't always the case with some of his more theatric decon. Coming Soon is an easy to wear Yohji for a younger crowd that's just about ready to outgrow their streetwear for something simple, organic and elegant.

Son of the founder of surf behemoths Billabong and Hurley, Joe Kazuo Knoernschild designs in L.A., but his KZO collection's minimalist vibe and understated style has more in common with the other side of the Pacific. KZO feels more like Tokyo's street scene than So Cal surf. Joe says KZO is lifestyle inspired with a target audience of "guys ages 18 to 35 with a taste for global style and cult fashion." If you're looking for casual with some sophistication, street smarts, and a few techno-inspired, personal details—like hidden iPod pockets— you'll dig KZO.
