Q: What is raw denim and how do you take care of it?
A: Raw (or “dry”) denim is denim that hasn’t been washed, artificially faded or distressed after dying.
Denim enthusiasts love raw denim because they prefer all the fading and distressing to be authentic and made by the wearer, not the factory. We call it “telling your own denim story” because it’s natural, unique and personal.
Raw denim is all about originality through natural fading and distressing patterns unique to the wearer. For best results, the standard is going 6 months with frequent wear before washing them for the first time.
Keep in mind that raw denim tends to stretch and should be purchased on the snug side. Some brands recommend sizing down, and others suggest selecting a size that buttons comfortably but is fitted throughout the leg to allow room for stretching.
Because raw denim isn’t washed, you may get some dye bleed early on. Run a finger across the thigh to see how much color comes off, as it varies from brand to brand. Just avoid white couches until you’ve broken them in a bit!
To accelerate the break in process, some brands suggest actually wearing your raw denim in the ocean. If you’re landlocked, the alternative is taking a little dip in the bathtub with your jeans on! Wet denim is a little tricky to get off, but this quirky process is part of the raw denim ritual!

Of course they’ll get dirty and stinky in time. Bon fires, BBQ’s, Teppan, and parties always send you home with a scent. To lose the odors without actually washing the denim, some people stick their jeans in the freezer! The denim doesn’t actually freeze, but odors are miraculously reduced over night!
Moderation is the key. You can wash your jeans as often as you want, but keep in mind that hot water will cause the indigo to wash out more quickly than cold or warm. Hand washing is always an option and dry cleaning is fine too. Hanging to dry is best to avoid shrinkage!
If this all sounds cool, you’re a denim enthusiast! Try a pair of raw denim and see if you like it!
